BOYERTOWN – The Peppermint Stick is once again holding its “Candy for Our Troops” event, this year honoring three local active military members.
The event — in its 10th year — kicked off on Wednesday, May 21, and runs through Sunday, May 25.
The Peppermint Stick, 26 E. Philadelphia Ave. in Boyertown, will put together candy-filled care packages to send to the military members as a token of appreciation from the community — recognizing their service and sacrifice, the business announced.
The individuals that will receive care packages are:
• Laura Adams, Navy Electrician’s Mate – 2024 Boyertown Area High School graduate
• Cpl. Gabriel Gilbert, Marine Corps – 2021 Boyertown graduate
• Sgt. Anthony Romano – Marine Corps – 2020 Roman Catholic High School graduate
“For the past decade, our ‘Candy for Our Troops’ event has been a meaningful way for our community to show its gratitude to the brave men and women who serve our country,” Rachael Kehler, owner of The Peppermint Stick, said in a statement. “This year’s ‘Candy for Our Troops’ event holds an extra special place in my heart. Laura Adams, who once worked right here at the store during her high school years, is now serving our country in the U.S. Navy. I couldn’t be prouder of all she has accomplished. It’s truly an honor to support her and all our local heroes.”
More Than Just Candy
While The Peppermint Stick is providing the treats for the care packages, Kehler is inviting the community to participate in the initiative by adding personal, handwritten cards to the packages.
Through May 25, visitors to the store are invited to fill out a provided card with messages of support for Adams, Gilbert and Romano.
“While we can provide the candy, the true care comes from the personal messages from our community,” store employee Jodie Moyer said in a statement. “These cards let our local heroes know that their sacrifices are seen, appreciated, and never forgotten.”
The Peppermint Stick Candy Store and Ice Cream Parlor is a vintage candy shop connected to its 1940s-themed ice cream parlor and soda fountain.
