At a time when most people end their working careers as they age, one local woman began her second career — as an actor.
Marie Ryan, 96, of Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, received acting lessons for her 75th birthday and became a voting member of the Screen Actors Guild.
Over the next 20 years, she built a three-page acting resume of over 60 credits, in films, TV shows, commercials, print ads and even a music video.
She appeared briefly in “I Don’t Know How She Does It” as a sleepy babysitter, after which the lead actor Sarah Jessica Parker said she was a pleasure.
After filming “Tenure,” lead actor Luke Wilson gave her a kiss on the cheek and said she was great.
You probably have seen her on TV as well. She was an extra in “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire,” and appeared on “Law and Order” three times, once as Doris Roberts’ socialite friend, with their photo together printed in TV Guide magazine.
She appeared on screen prominently in “That Awkward Moment” as Zak Efron’s wealthy grandmother. Miles Teller brought her flowers in one scene. In the trailer, he also walks past her and their family without pants on!
Ryan last worked as an actor on a commercial in 2022.
Ryan recommends acting as an activity for fellow seniors.
“If someone is relaxed and wants to have fun,” she said. “It’s like the lottery. Most people don’t make it, but somebody wins, and it could be you.”
Brian Duffin is Marie Ryan’s son.
