POTTSTOWN — Borough police are cracking down on riders of scooters, e-bikes and other “micro-mobility devices” whose riders are violating traffic laws.
Borough Manager Justin Keller and the Police Department made the announcement earlier this month.
“We’ve all seen that there is more prevalent use of e-bikes and scooters in the borough. We recognize that with some of the rising costs, more people are turning to micro-mobility transportation options such as bikes, e-bikes, scooters and things of that nature,” Keller said. “And while I think most in the borough are generally supportive of these forms of transportation, riders must assure they are using them safely and in accordance with the vehicle code if they are riding them in the roadway.”

“Recently, the police department has recorded a marked increase in accidents that have caused injuries to riders and in most of these cases, the person operating the motor vehicle was not at fault, but rather the person operating the micro-mobility device, such as an e-bike or a scooter, was at fault because they were not following the traffic laws,” Keller said.
“Some of the most common things are riding on the wrong direction, ignoring stop signs and stop lights and things of that nature,” Keller said. “These create unnecessary dangerous situations for everybody.”
In an attempt to curb this trend, “during the next few months, the police department will be stepping up enforcement on this activity and those violating traffic laws will be given warnings or issued moving violations,” Keller said. “If you are using this type of mobility device, please understand you must follow the vehicle code or you will be cited.”

And in case you are not sure about those rules, the police department has posted a reminder on its Facebook page.
