PHILADELPHIA — The Phillies hope that Edmundo Sosa, who was lifted from Friday’s game against Kansas City with groin soreness, can avoid the injured list.
Sosa reported feeling better to manager Rob Thomson on Saturday. But he was meeting with doctors pregame to determine a treatment plan.
Sosa was lifted for Weston Wilson in the seventh inning Friday. He had been hobbling in Thursday night’s win, and Thomson indicated the groin has been dogging him for a while.
“It’s definitely something he was playing through,” Thomson said. “But he went for a ball up the middle last night, and he came out of it and I thought, ‘that didn’t look right.’ When he got to the bench, he was honest with me, said Yeah, it’s hurting. So we got him out.”
Sosa is hitting .270 with seven homers and 33 RBIs in 85 games. He’d started five of the last seven at shortstop after Trea Turner was placed on the injured list Monday with a hamstring strain.
Bryson Stott started at shortstop Saturday night and is the medium-term fill-in if both Turner and Sosa remain unavailable. A Gold Glove finalist at second base last year, Stott played 83 games as a primary shortstop as a rookie in 2022.
“It’s a little longer of a throw. You’re seeing the ball come off at a different angle,” Thomson said. “So there’s an adjustment there, but he’s played enough over there that he’ll be fine.”
Turner, who is hoping to return in time for the playoffs, ran in the pool Saturday. He also played catch and did glove work. The goal is to start swinging again Sunday or Monday, Thomson said.
Alec Bohm (left shoulder inflammation) is also picking up a bat again, doing work off the tee and possibly soft toss later Saturday in addition to a battery of infield drills. Bohm will travel with the team on the upcoming road trip to Los Angeles and Arizona. Turner will not.
