PHILADELPHIA — Pro Bowl left guard Landon Dickerson grimaced on the ground in pain, holding his right leg, late in the Eagles’ 2-hour, 10-minute open scrimmage at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday night.
Concerned teammates gathered around him. Training staff and chief security officer Dom DiSandro helped him off the field, and then he was carted into the locker room. He appeared to twist his right ankle, perhaps with another player’s shoe underneath his, while pass blocking.
Dickerson, 26, was selected to his third straight Pro Bowl last year. He signed a four-year, $84 million contract extension in March. There was no immediate update on his injury.
Tyler Steen seems to have won the starting job at right guard, but he could shift over to the left side if Dickerson is out. Kenyon Green, Trevor Pryor, Matt Keegan and Darian Kinnard are also future options on the right side.
Receiver A.J. Brown (hamstring) was back on the field in limited action, and linebacker Zack Baun (back) saw limited reps after returning the previous day.
Players who didn’t practice Sunday were Green (shoulder), receiver Elijah Cooks (shoulder), running back Montrell Johnson (hamstring), long-snapper Charley Hughlett (neck) and defensive tackle Byron Young (groin).
Quick observations:
• Newly acquired cornerback Jakorian Bennett got some first-team reps opposite Quinyon Mitchell.
• Jalen Hurts connected with receiver DeVonta Smith for a 25-yard touchdown that made the crowd of approximately 50,000 erupt. (The game was a sellout of 60,000, with proceeds benefiting the Eagles Autism Foundation.) Smith beat Cooper DeJean, whose help from safety Sydney Brown came late. When Smith was working against Mitchell, “Q” broke up two passes.
• Receiver Jahan Dotson, acquired late in the preseason last year, continued to show chemistry with Hurts, impressively hauling in a sideline pass and tapping both feet in bounds.
• Linebackers Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Jihaad Campbell both had sacks, blowing past a normally adept blocker in running back Saquon Barkley.
• Defensive tackle Gabe Hall again made his presence felt as a disrupter up front.
• Dorian Thompson-Robinson continued to make a strong push for the third QB spot against rookie Kyle McCord, a St. Joseph’s Prep alum.
“They don’t get as many reps as Tanner (McKee) and obviously as Jalen … so we’re splitting the reps with those two guys (for third string),” head coach Nick Sirianni said. “We’ve had to find creative ways to try to get them reps in practice. One day, Kyle goes in with the threes first, and one day DTR does. They’re both doing a good job.
“Kyle does a very good job of knowing where to go with the football quickly and delivering accurate throws. I think that’s something that he excels at, his mind of how he processes through it and then his ability to be accurate. You just want to continue to just put him in as many situations and reps as you can when reps aren’t always available.
“And DTR has done a nice job. You can tell he’s played football before. He does a nice job going to the right place with the football consistently. I think he does a good job of extending plays. So, they both have unique abilities that you love to work with out of a quarterback.”
