What a tragedy in Texas. I wonder if the flash flood warnings were taken seriously. I know I no longer pay much attention to “Severe Weather Warnings”. We have almost daily “Stay inside heat advisory, or “Stay inside cold advisory,” or “Severe thunderstorm warning,” or “Stay inside poor air quality.” Sorry, but they do this too often. I get the delicate balance, but stop crying wolf.

As I approach retirement, I am ending my subscription to The Mercury. I can use the money for Medicare B … and cruises. I will miss jousting with the commenters on Sound Off, far right or left. No one was wrong or right all the time (even me). Let’s all work together to make this country the pinnacle of the world it once was. Jim Fitch, I will miss your humor. Best wishes to all.

The article about Tower Health and the nurses mentioned informational, not a strike. What often amazes me is, if someone strikes for two or three weeks, like in Philadelphia, do they ever make up for that loss for the year by getting a small percentage increase? I’m sure the union officials don’t take a loss, only the people on strike. The officials will always support a strike; they always get their pay from union dues.
Kudos to Jay Miller for making up stuff that Jay claims can’t be made up — must be hard work. Diana, you don’t like the BBB, so tell us specifically what is bad about it. Kudos to Lefty Lucy for the July 8 sarcasm — good work. Robert Minninger and Michael Stern continue to do yeoman’s work using truth and facts to inform everyone. And thanks to the great Tony Phyrillas for Sound Off.

Levengood (who never cites sources), your recent history lesson on Medicaid is laughable. Did you get your info from a Facebook, Truth Social or Twitter meme? Approximately 60% of nursing home residents have their daily care paid by Medicaid now, after giving up all their assets. Boomers are retirement age. Working poor get Medicaid subsidies to help cover ACA insurance premiums, but MAGA memes say so much fraud! Where are the millions of prosecutions?

Ya gotta laugh at the soundoff liberal idiots claiming Trump held a military parade for himself. The permit for the parade was applied for in June of 2024 and approved by the Biden administration’s autopen! Get over it! You just can’t handle Trump winning each and every day! It’s what we voted for! Promises made, promises delivered!

Merited or not, Trump’s words and actions have been suspect throughout his adult life. Upon entering politics, his core message has been neither government nor the press should be believed. Now that he is the government, we are expected to believe anything he says is gospel (or else). Sorry Donald, you’ve trained me too well. I believe you and your cult are the enemy of the people, and not to be trusted.

Jim Fitch is a national treasure. I couldn’t stop laughing at his recent joke about how some people he doesn’t like are fat. Hilarious. Do ugly next, Jim. We need more humor in our lives in times like these.

Sound Off MAGAts — Levengood, Stern, Palladino — your ICE raids are peak hypocrisy. You whine about crime but cheer when terrified brown families are ripped from their homes. You scream “Christian values” while mocking Christ’s message. Raiding churches? Deporting workers feeding your economy? You’re not patriots — you’re racist foot soldiers for a failed game show host. This isn’t law and order — it’s cowardice in camo, hate in a flag, and blasphemy wrapped in a bible.

Democrats have not voted against tax-free overtime or tips. They voted against $950 billion cut to Medicaid, disincentives for clean energy, cancellation of programs that feed poor children. It was a 970-page bill, and a lot of bad stuff was hidden in those pages, unless you’re a billionaire, of course. Oh yeah, $100 billion to ICE, and all this will raise the deficit by $4 trillion.

If Whoopi Goldberg of “The View” thinks that Black people are treated better in Iran than here, hopefully, she has a seat on the next flight to Iran. After a while, send back a report to let us know how well she has been treated. I’m sure we would love to know the truth.

Last November, we elected a president in an electoral landslide. This year, we are dealing with a constitutional crisis and the biggest threat to our Democratic Republic that we have ever faced. Judges are issuing all kinds of nationwide injunctions, bringing to a halt many executive branch actions. Until 1960, these nationwide injunctions were unheard of, but since 2008, they have increased exponentially. Now these unelected judges are taking away the electorate’s power.

You would think that with two weeks off, our MAGA friends would come back maybe a little bit mellow. No way Jose! Little Robbie Andrews went full bore unhinged with his National Guard rant. The “Party Guard,” as it was called in the day, was a weekend softball bash with endless beer runs. The little fellow doesn’t like the truth. Nice try, little guy!

It’s nice that The Mercury adds the Clip It section, but why can’t the coupons be for the Tri-County area? Presently the coupons are for Reading and Berks.
The congress is like a diaper; it needs changing. Money is power, power is money. You cannot eat money.

Dot, the reason that there were more pictures of the “No Kings” rallies is that there were millions of people across the U.S. and around the world. Trump’s parade had mostly empty seats.
I heard, because of our extremely hot weather and possible power outages, the National Weather Service and the Postal Service have created a pamphlet on how to cook things like lasagna or baked potatoes in your mailbox! How great is that?
