Memorial Day travelers may be in for a pleasant surprise when they fuel up this year.
This Memorial Day will be the cheapest at the pump since 2021, and the lowest price, adjusted for inflation, since 2003, according to GasBuddy, an app-based fuel savings service.
Gas prices are expected to average $3.08 per gallon on Memorial Day.
That price is down substantially from $3.58 on Memorial Day last year.
GasBuddy noted that this year’s relatively lower prices are influenced by decreased crude oil costs amid an increase in production from OPEC+, the potential for a nuclear deal with Iran, and some economic uncertainty.
“Prices are forecast to average $3.02 per gallon over the summer from Memorial Day through Labor Day with a sub-$3 per gallon national average possible on some days, especially toward the latter half of the summer,” GasBuddy said in a press release.
In Berks County, gas prices averaged $3.21 on May 22, according to AAA.
On the same day, the cheapest gas in the county was being sold at Bethel Truck Stop, at $2.91 per gallon, followed by Sunoco on Lancaster Avenue in Bethel, at $2.95 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.
Sam’s Club in Temple, Weis Markets in Oley and BJ’s in Reading tied for third cheapest, at $2.99 per gallon.
Montgomery, Schuylkill and Chester counties showed similar average prices, at $3.22, $3.21 and $3.18, respectively, AAA said.
Lower gas prices stand to benefit quite a few — 69% of Americans plan to take a road trip this summer, according to GasBuddy, which surveyed a random sample of its users in May, releasing the results of its 2025 Summer Travel Survey and forecast for summer travel this week.
“The average traveler is planning multiple journeys — the majority (32%) intend to take two road trips this season,” GasBuddy said. “Many Americans are venturing far, with 40% expecting to drive more than 5 hours.”
Among summer travel holidays, Memorial Day leads with 52% of travelers planning road trips, followed by Independence Day at 42% and Labor Day at 35%, GasBuddy noted.
Inflation remains concern for many households — cost has emerged as the top priority for travelers this summer, ahead of factors like destination and accommodations, GasBuddy noted.
But for about half of travelers, gas prices aren’t a worry — 47% of respondents said the cost of gas is not impacting their travel plans.
“While we’re forecasting the lowest summer gas prices in years, economic jitters are slightly dampening optimism — but we still expect a robust travel season,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Rather than canceling plans, travelers are becoming more strategic with their spending.”
